Review :

New gangsters are out to displace the old, and Michel Constantin is among them

Michel Constantin is a noticeable supporting character actor, with a distinctive carriage, face and serious look, in such movies as "Le Trou", "Le Deuxieme Soufflé", "Last Known Address", "Cold Sweat", and "The Outside Man". He's typically a gangster, as in this one "Killing in the Sun", and he typically is loyal, courageous, not prone to babble or speak out of turn, and he has a code.

What's different here is that he's the lead actor. Supporting him is Marcel Bozzufi, instantly recognizable from "The French Connection" but also many other movies like "Z", "Chino" and "Cadaveri Eccellenti". In the shadowy background as a foe of Constantin is the reliable Henry Silva.

This is a well-told and well-fashioned story that held my interest completely and surprised me a number of times. There is no need to outline the plot, other than to say that the machinations of the gangsters and their rivalries predominate. We get a good feel for the characters. The picture has realistic action in more than sufficient quantity too, but yet it is the furthest thing from a Hollywood action picture of this day and age.

The settings are in Marseille and the surrounding countryside and shores, not Paris and not urban. Instead we see narrow streets and of course some marvelous looking automobiles.

This is a good one, the police presence being rather small. Fans of noir and policiers will like it too. Recommended.
