Refreshing drama taking on issues "off the beaten track"

This is a refreshing drama taking on issues "off the beaten track" of the main stream Finnish historical dramas.

It is spring of 1918. The Finnish war of independence is over. The war had turned into a bloody civil war between whites and reds. A young scientist and officer, captain von Munck, is sent to close the border between the newly independent Finland and Russia under Bolshevik revolution. St. Petersbourg is close, only 40 km away and foreign, Russian and Finnish refugees, spies and revolutionaries try to cross the border to Finland.

The young man must set up a clear border between Finland and Russia, white and red, enemy and friend, us and them. While the task seems clear he finds out the execution of his command in concrete situations is very difficult. Right choices turn out to be wrong ones and correcting them make things worse.

This historical war movie is the border that most other war movies take for granted. There is a border, there is us and them. This is clear - also in this movie - but where is the border, where is the "thin red line" right here and now? In the story the border, us and them ,is moving from situation to another, from place to another.

The movie has some technical flaw but the script and editing work well. As a description of the situation after 1918 civil war this is a rare filmatisation. I would recommend movie makers to look slightly of the beaten track when choosing historical war and drama topics.

Dan Burgess is a nice guy. He happens to be a Christian. Dan can't get a date with a girl and thinks that all of his friends are having all of the fun. He is constantly being bothered by non-believers and being made fun of.

Dan prays one night, and wishes he was never a believer in Jesus.

His prayer is answered for one day. Things get hairy from there. An angel appears to Dan and explains his prayer is granted.

So, all of the impact that Dan has had on starting a Christian club.

inspiring tragedy

I liked this film but to like it, you must know more about the history of Congo. You must also know some more about Belgians and their disrespect (and that is a metaphore!) of the Congolese state.

Lumumba and the Congolese people didn't deserve this as he was right. We Belgians did exploit them for decades. But just because Lumumba reacted not so friendly to Bwana Kitoko (the king was called this way by the Congolese in a previous visit, he was hailed as a great leader) they had to further destabilize Congo and assassinate Lumumba. So he called for the help of the USSR, that was his only option as everybody else was against him. For the Congolese people the US didn't do anything like they did for us with the Marshall Plan. They did support Mobutu's cruel dictatorial rule with lots of money. What good did that do for the average Congolese?

And the trouble didn't stop with the flight of Mubutu. In modern sociological terms, Congo is considered a failed state. And that has it's reasons (and we Belgians are responsible for a large part of those). I hope that Lumuba's dream will still come true and that the Congolese peace process will last so peace and a way of living that is accepted by all Congolese may finally come for them.

Back to the film: You can't expect to understand the complex situation the new independent Congo was put in just by watching this film. That's like thinking the film Enemy at the Gates will explain me everything about the battle of Stalingrad. The film is restricted in many ways and the viewer must understand that. first: It's a film, not a documentary. Some of the scenes are interpretations but they are needed for the plot. second: The main character is Lumumba. Not everything about the troubles in Katanga or elsewhere is told, neither is everything about Mobutu told. It would have been an endless film that way. third: The film is an African film, let them create their own ways of telling this story. White people shouldn't tell them how to tell a story. But I'm glad that some funded this film that tell some people more about an unclear history. It might encourage them to find out more about Lumumba or various other things after the credits roll away and that is a good thing.

greatly acted, terribly said but unremarkable on the whole

Begins as a sensitive and involving drama guilt but ends up degenerating into a corny story; the cast is good enough but the story gets more and more clichéd. It starts telling the difficulty in coping with a terribly tragic event and describing the fragility of all the characters, that is really felt. The actors bring an intensity to the characters that is really deep. Phoenix and Ruffalo, as well as Connelly, offer a strong emotional foundation that makes them real and genuinely painful. The thing is that coincidences and links between the events are in the end too many and everything risks of falling to pieces, a real pity because the plot was initially very promising.

Amazing

I just had the pleasure of seeing this film at the Albuquerque Film Festival and have to say that I was severely impressed. I have not been moved by a film in this way for quite some time. The move this movie made away from the stereotypical negativity that can blanket this genre was a breath of fresh air. When you consider the short period of time taken to shoot this film(19 days)it becomes that much more of a wonder. Being that this is Giancarlo's first project as Director, I greatly look forward to his next. I also had the pleasure of hearing him speak about his vision for this movie at the festival after the viewing and I have to say that his intentions ring clear. I am a better person for having seen it.

Worth a watch

Strangers is a movie dealing with personal relationships and the effects of extramarital ones.The movie is about 2 men,Rahul(Jimmy Shergill) and Sanjeev Rai(Kay Kay Menon) from different walks of life who do not to know each other and meet on a train journey to London,and during the course of journey get to know about each others unpleasant family lives. Jimmy's acting as a suspecting and dissatisfied husband is good,Kay Kay's skills are noteworthy too.The ladies' role are nothing special. Music is average. The concept is good but one must have the patience to sit through 1 and a 1/2 hours to enjoy this film. The first half is almost entirely shot on a train.The second half has interesting twists and turns that take one by surprise. All in all,watchable

First step of the new revolution : bring culture back !

The film has a very simple basic premise. Television has been reduced to the lowest common denominator and people swallow it because they have gotten used to it. As such, they are reduced to an antisocial drone-like resistance that no longer resembles life as our fathers remember. Improve what's on the TV and you'll improve society.

For someone who's himself quite sick of all those reality soaps and the garbage that comes out from the Hollywood assembly line, I found this film refreshing and inspirational. Although I wasn't quite fond of the obvious ultra-left ideology you can find in between the lines, the message of this film goes beyond ideology and is a call to all of us.

"Democratic" capitalist society has become a tyrannical system run by corporations who enslave us for profit, while we, the average consumer, are barely aware of the golden cage in which we live. We've all become paranoid little f***'s who waste our time on shallow small talk and brainless entertainment rather than having real conversations on real topics and devouring real culture. This film tries to open your eyes to that reality and reach the inner child in all of us.... the inner child that makes us human.

Obviously this film doesn't have the budget of a Hollywood blockbuster and the story is most definitely naive, but the very optimism of this film and its lonely dissident cry make it far more interesting to me than anything Hollywood has produced since "V For Vendetta".

That's all I have to say......

Painfully brilliant

This is a movie unlike most movies I've seen. It portrays a kind of character that you don't see much in Brazilian films - a deeply anguished young middle class woman, with writing aspirations and a desire for intensity. You don't know exactly why she's so miserable and where her anguish comes from, but you feel it deeply with her. She's trying to find meaning for her meaningless life, and she searches everywhere she can, even if she might get hurt. When she does get hurt, she aches but goes on to the next try. I guess she's one of those people that prefer to be in pain than to feel nothing at all. Ultimately, it's the writing that helps her keep going by turning the despair into something beautiful.

It's a great movie, well constructed, with a very strong lead character and an interesting plot, but the overwhelming factor really comes from the actress, Leandra Leal. She is fearless, brave enough to bare her soul and her body for this performance. I'd say it's a great film for anyone that is acquainted with their own dark places.

Crap

After the debacle of VIRODHI(1992) which launched flop actor Munish/Armaan Kohli Rajkumar Kohli tries again to launch him with crap AULAD KE DUSHMAN

The film has a good message but the handling is too mediocre The start is well done but slowly the film gets too melodramatic and the direction is bad

Also there are several illogical scenes throughout the film

Shatrughan's poverty is well shown but the going-ons are unbearable at many places and by the time it ends it gets worse

Direction by RKK is below average Music is bad

A married saleswoman misses her transportation and tags along with a troupe of improvisational comedians. I would watch Sandrine Bonnaire reading from the phone book, and it's a pleasure to watch her here, but I left the theatre thinking "So what?". I found the lead male character completely uninteresting, and I could not understand what she would see in him. The whole film leads to their affair, but I didn't find it at all believable. The best I can say about this film is that I did not dislike it.

The sad old story of doomed genius

The association of artistic genius and madness is a banal one, but this film starring Kim Rossi Stweart is a subtle and sadly convincing portrayal of the tragic short life of contemporary Italian jazz great Luca Flores, whose demons caught up with him. Walter Veltroni, from 2001 to 2008 the popular leftist mayor of Rome, wrote a book about Flores called 'The Disk of the World' on which this beautifully photographed film biography is based. With its harmonious earth tones and recognizable but never clichéd images of Florence, the cinematography is another reason for watching, besides the performance of Stewart and a good supporting cast and the music itself, which evokes a now legendary musician who played with Chet Baker and Dave Holland and left a legacy of fine recordings but took his life in 1995 at the age of thirty-nine.

Stewart is a handsome and charismatic actor, one of Italy's chief current matinée idols, who seems to have an innate mystery and distance and sadness about him. His recent outstanding performances include the repentant father of the severely disabled boy in Gianni Amelio's powerful 2004 'The Keys to the House'/'Le chiavi di casa,' the aptly named "Il Freddo" (the Cold One) in veteran actor Michele Placido's 2005 directorial debut 'Criminal Romance,' and the husband in his own strong 2006 beginning as a helmer, 'Along the Ridge'/'Ance libero va bene.'

Flores' father Giovanni (Michele Placido) was a geologist who worked in Cuba and Belize and then took the family to Mozambique, where (as the film shows it) Luca fell free from a car that crashed, killing his mother. He never overcame this trauma.

The film elides early events, showing Luca in a public audition for the Luigi Cherubini conservatory of music in Florence in which he dazzles everyone by sight-reading a challenging solo piece by Rachmaninof with concert quality even though he's had no previous formal training. The next thing we know two young local jazzmen, Alessandro (Claudio Gioè) and Raffaele (Roberto De Francesco), give Luca a Bud Powell record and with some disapproval from his father Luca starts to play in a successful jazz trio with the pair in a club and they get a glowing national review right away that leads to recordings. At the club Cinzia (Jasmine Trinca) falls for him and takes him home and a long love affair follows, but he turns bitter and suspicious toward her just when she's pregnant. He remains in touch with his brother and sisters Pablo (Corso Salani), Heidi (Mariella Valentini), Baba (Paola Cortellesi), and especially close to Baba. Even when he and Cinzia are estranged she continues to love him and is the only one who can help him at some moments of crisis.

In the sequences that follow the early successes, things slow down as the tone darkens and the "male oscuro" increasingly hovers over Luca, who despite his love of family and of Cinzia further and further withdraws into his music--or, in moments of utter confusion, into obsessively repeated scales. After a particularly bad crisis, Luca goes back to the Africa of his childhood where he rides thousands of kilometers on a motorcycle, finds peace, and returns to music. But he also relives the traumatic accident. Along with whatever mental instability he had, Flores had a terrible case of survival guilt. He had the impression that he was killing everybody. When Chet Baker fell from the balcony and died in 1988, Flores said he'd killed him with his scales.

It's the sad old story of doomed genius. The later sequences are hard to watch, not because they are maudlin or forced-- this is the most tasteful and understated of films--but because the ending is so inevitable.
