Review :

A marked improvement

Sometimes critical reception doesn't stop a sequel from being made. That certainly didn't stop the numerous 'Friday the 13th,' 'Hellraiser,' and 'Witchcraft' sequels from being churned out. Money talks and as long as each installment makes a nice chunk of it, another will be on the way. 'Boogeyman' received scathing reviews from most of the critics and viewers, but that didn't stop it from doing pretty well at the Box Office. Two years later this sequel came, only instead it hit the shelves instead of the screens. Too bad because it's superior in many ways.

Pros: Excellent performances from the cast, who get more to work with than the actors in the original did. Good, often eerie score. Pace just races right along. Some good scares here and there. Creative and gory kills, some of which will likely churn your stomach. Plus the effects are well done. Stronger and more layered plot. Grim atmosphere.

Cons: Takes the slasher route, which means there's a lot more gore than genuine scares. Plot does wear thin in the second half, which basically has the characters running around the building to find the others and avoid the monster. Jeff Betancourt's first directing job is pretty bland. Doesn't know when to end. Treads familiar territory.

Final thoughts: If the first film in a series isn't all that good then one usually expects the sequel to not be much better. Well 'Boogeyman 2' is one of those rare cases where the sequel is not only an improvement, but is actually worth the price of admission. Sure it's not a classic, but it's got enough of the goods to satisfy.

My rating: 3.5/5
