Best movie ever
You are not alone in thinking this is the best movie ever made, rgulla. In a poll conducted in AP, this movie was voted the best telugu movie ever made, and I totally agree.
What makes this movie fascinating is, in my opinion, this is only movie ever made that speaks to all ages at the same time. Harry potter is a children's' movie, we all know that. Similarly there are adult, young people's movies etc. But this is the only movie that a child can see for the magic and Gatothkacha. A young adult will watch the love story, and finally, an older adult will see the interaction between the two families, the politics that are played out. To top it off, for the retired person, this is a religious movie! No other movie, in any other language, is able to reach out to every moviegoer of every age.

Gets better every time i see it!! Tanner Andersen makes a phenomenal performance as Dominic. Except for Dameen Dedrick, who plays a "Crooked FBI Agent", everyone made an exceptional on-screen-performance!! If you haven't seen this movie: rent it, buy it, do what ever you have to do to see this! movie of the year! Alexis Smith, played as "Sam", did a great job! her face expression when she was hung up whit a rope, was so real that I could feel the tension in my body! goosebumps all over!! congratulation everyone! very nice work! it wouldn't hurt if they'd put a little more money in it, thats why i wouldn't give it a full score. Outstanding addition to the psycho-thriller genre
A very well made psycho-thriller that stands at the top of a sub-genre kick-started by Adrian Lyne's FATAL ATTRACTION in 1987. LAKEVIEW TERRACE features Samuel L. Jackson in riveting form as the main antagonist, a character who's not only the neighbour-from-hell but a cop-from-hell too (imagine this guy on the beat with Ray Liotta's character from UNLAWFUL ENTRY!). LAKEVIEW TERRACE sidesteps cliché throughout – arguably until the climax, anyway – and delivers plenty of suspense and thrills in its story of a racist-with-a-twist – this time it's Jackson who's the racist, a guy who hates whites.
Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington are somewhat bland modern actors, but the quality of the scripts drives them to give fairly good turns here. The film belongs to Jackson in the end, though, and he keeps us watching through thick and thin. Realism is often swept aside in these types of production (I'm thinking of you, PACIFIC HEIGHTS) but not so here. Neil LaBute has made some awful films (in fact his one before this was the dire Nicolas Cage remake THE WICKER MAN) but Lakeview Terrace is an unexpected delight – a high-calibre piece of professional filmmaking that never disappoints.

After watching this film, I was a bit disappointed. While I enjoyed Karina Gidi's performance, portions of her character mystify me. The plot is not very engaging and most of the emotions/meanings of the film, while promising, never seem to deepen. The cinematography and editing were simple and average. I enjoyed myself during portions, especially the development of Gidi's character in the beginning. I think my basic problem was that the symbolisms and motifs were not developed enough to keep the tempo and narrative from lagging. The director (and the author of the novel) clearly had something to say but the film failed to make the point. A director can have an incredible concept but if he or she fails to communicate it through the film, there is nothing to look forward to but popcorn.

Deeply effecting and moving film that defied my expectations
Despite being quite far removed from my expectations, I was thoroughly impressed by Dog Bite Dog. I rented it not knowing much about it, but I essentially expected it to be a martial arts/action film in the standard Hong Kong action tradition, of which I am a devoted fan. I ended up getting something entirely different, which is not at all a bad thing. While the film could be classified as such, and there is definitely some good action and hand to hand combat scenes in the film, it is definitely not the primary focus. Its characters are infinitely more important to the film than its fights, a rather uncommon thing in many Hong Kong action movies.
I was really quite surprised by the intricacy of the characters and character relationships in the film. The lead character, played by Edison Chen (who is really very good), becomes infinitely more complex by the end of the film than I ever thought he would be after watching the first thirty minutes. The police characters also defied my expectations thoroughly. In fact, the stark and honest portrayal of the seldom seen dark side of the police force was quite possible my favorite aspect of the film. I don't know that I would say Dog Bite Dog entirely subverts typical notions of bad criminal, good cop, but it certainly distorts them in ways not often seen in film (unfortunately). So many films, especially Hong Kong action films I find, portray police in what is frankly a VERY ignorantly idealized light. This is one of my least favorite things about the genre. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Dog Bite Dog actually had some very unique, and really quite courageous, ideas to present about the police force. There are negotiation scenes in this film that I have never seen the likes of before, and doubt I will ever see again, and am sure I will remember for quite a while. Also, the criminal characters are shown from an interesting perspective as well, there is some documentary footage in the film of Cambodian boys no older than ten being made to fight each other to the death with their bare hands, which I thought was one of the film's most powerful and moving moments. It says a lot about the reason these guys are the way they are, rather than simply condemning them. Also, the relationship between Chen's character and the girl he meets in the junk yard reveals a lot about his character. It wasn't until this element entered the film that I really started to see the film as an emotional experience rather than only a visceral one. There is something about most on screen relationships that doesn't quite get through to me, but for some reason this one really did. The actress does an incredible job with this role which I imagine was not easy to play.
Dog Bite Dog also features some really breathtaking cinematography, all though it is unfortunately rather uneven. There were some moments that I found really striking, particularly in the last segment of the film, but there was also a good deal of camera work that was just OK. Another slight problem I had was with the pacing, which I also felt was uneven. I found a lot of the "looking for a boat" scenes to be a little alienating, all though it quickly picks up after that. The action scenes are short and not too plentiful, but are truly powerful and effecting, particularly towards the end. The fight choreography is honestly not all that impressive for the most part, all though to its credit it is solid and fairly realistic, but the true strength is the emotional content behind the fights. The final scene, while not a marvel of martial artistry or fight choreography, is one of the most powerful final fights I have ever seen, and I've seen quite a few martial arts films.
I suppose the biggest determining factor of whether or not one will get much out of Dog Bite Dog is whether or not you can connect with the characters. All of them are certainly some of the more flawed characters one is likely to see in a film of any kind, but there was something very human about all of them that I couldn't help but be drawn to and really feel for them, particularly Chen's girlfriend. I should say that I doubt most people will like the film as much as I did simply because I imagine that most people will not like or care about the characters in the same way, but I still recommend it highly all the same. It is truly a deeply moving and effecting film if you give it a chance.

A sweet story with some really funny situations of trying to make it in the biz. Great for actors or family viewing. The scenes with the kid and the Negro League Baseball player were very cool. I also like the appearances by Joe Barbara of Another World and Kelly Ripa of All My Children.

I saw this movie with my father when i was very young, some 20 years back. At that time i liked the movie only because of comedy actor Munawar Zarif. However, a month back I was lucky enough to watch the movie again and liked it very much.
The movie is a classic blockbuster Pakistani movie, full of drama, romance, comedy and super hit songs. The songs of the movie are evergreen. Basically, the film does not have a unique plot and it consists of "old trio" of two male and one female, however, the superb acting, songs and comedy makes the film a must-see for Pakistani movie lovers.

pretty, but overly derivative
This film looks darned good, and its moody atmosphere is a beautiful thing as well. Unfortunately, Williams relies far to heavily on motifs from Haruki Murakami novels like "The Wild Sheep Chase" and "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle," borrows a bit too obviously from "Eyes Wide Shut," and steals outright from "Donnie Darko." All of this might have been forgiven if Williams had conjured a gripping story here or something (anything!) of his own that was strikingly original. Sadly, this is not the case. The characters are never very compelling, and the story never manages to build any real momentum. As a result, "Starfish Hotel" is certainly watchable but not memorable.

Dreams do not only come during sleep...
This movie was one long, slow, blissful dream. I can hardly explain how much I have been moved by this movie. It exists beyond what is projected on screen, appeals to some of one's innermost sensations, feelings almost forgotten, like the simple pleasure of waking up in the morning, opening one's window, and breathing, deeply. Since I live in Paris, I was lucky enough to meet Yen (the interpret of Lien) and Hung (the director) and talk to them personally. And I understood where the movie's deeply heartfelt nature came from : simply, it was the expression of the greatest sincerity and sensitivity of all. Hung and Yen are both just like this movie, just like the Scent of Green Papaya too : fascinated with simplicity, and constantly looking for beauty in its simplest form, in the most obvious gestures of everyday life. Waking up had always been a routine for me. After seeing this movie, it has become a pleasure renewed every morning. Never before had I understood the worth of movements executed slowly, fluently, harmoniously, almost like a ceremony. A la Verticale de l'Eté is not an obvious movie, where everything is suddenly thrown at the spectator who needs do nothing but open his mouth and swallow whatever is shoved down his throat. This demanding film asks a total commitment, asks you to completely forget everything else than the movie. But if you let yourself sink into the movie, if you make that initial effort, this film will reward you with much more than mere images and temporary distraction. I truly believe that this movie will forever stay in the hearts of those who have seen it. I have seen it four times so far, and can't get fed up with it. There is one problem about this movie though : it makes it particularly hard to get back into the "real" world... That is probably why I keep going, again and again, to see this movie. I think I like to believe that life can be a dream sometimes.
"Koi Tujh Sa Kahan" was Reema Khan's debut directorial venture, and for those uninitiated to Pakistan's cinema, she is one of the major actresses/model who works in the Lahore-based movie industry. The film is a notch above the average fare turned out by Lahore-based film makers, however there are too many distractions and below-par attributes of the film that attenuate what was potentially a strong plot.
The story revolves around a hotel-heiress (our director, Reema, in the title role) who gets married to an ordinary joe (Muamar Rana), the subsequent affair of the husband and a murder which transforms the movie from what is seemingly a sappy love story to a pseudo- thriller that is interrupted by many song and dance sequences, useless comedy and some very surreal characters (Nadeem as "Uncle Romeo" being one of them).
The story line is strong, but it's in the screen writing department that the film suffers the most. There was absolutely no need for constant interruptions by the asinine comic acts, and the kind of characters shaped by the script writers call their own sanity and intelligence in question. Nadeem as Uncle Romeo?!?! Give me a break! Everyone hams to the hilt -- it seems that the Lahore film industry feels that unless that characters go totally over the top, their message won't register with the audience. Veena Malik is very, very annoying. The songs come as distractions and do not take the plot forward, even though Amjad Bobby's score is decent. Camera work is shoddy, and typical Lahore-film industry style, the zoom lens is overused and is there in probably 70% of the frames of the movie. Speaks volumes about the lazy DoPs that Reema Khan employed.
There IS a twist in the movie that catches you by surprise and is the only redeeming quality of the film, along with the decent wardrobe choice and overall lack of tackiness that's generally associated with Lahore made movies. For that, and the pleasant wardrobe and some eye candy thrown throughout the film, it gets a 5 from me. That too because it is a debut effort from a lady not exactly known for her refinement or sophistication.

A Nutshell Review: Mukhsin
Mukhsin is a beautiful movie about a first love story. Everyone probably has one, and this is writer-director Yasmin Ahmad's story of hers, with a boy called Mukhsin. We know that her movies have been semi-autobiographical of sorts, having scenes drawn upon her personal experiences, and it is indeed this sharing and translating of these emotions to the big screen, that has her films always exude a warm sincerity and honesty. Mukhsin is no different, and probably the most polished ad confident work to date (though I must add, as a personal bias, that Sepet still has a special place in my heart).
Our favourite family is back - Pak Atan, Mak Inom, Orked and Kak Yam, though this time, we go back to when Orked is age 10. The characters are all younger from the movies we've journeyed with them, from Rabun to Gubra, and here, Sharifah Amani's sisters Sharifah Aryana and Sharifah Aleya take on the roles of Orked and Mak Inom respectively, which perhaps accounted for their excellent chemistry together on screen, nevermind that their not playing sibling roles. The only constant it seems is Kak Yam, played by Adibah Noor, and even Pak Atan has hair on his head! Through Mukshin the movie, we come full circle with the characters, and the world that Yasmin has introduced us to. We come to learn of and understand the family a little bit more, set in the days when they're still living in their kampung (revisited back in Rabun), where Orked attends a Chinese school, and packs some serious combination of punches (and you wonder about that burst of energy in Gubra, well, she had it in her since young!). The perennial tomboy and doted child of the family, she prefers playing with the boys in games, rather than mindless "masak-masak" with the girls, and favourite outings include going with the family to football matches.
The arrival of a boy called Mukhsin (Mohd Syafie Naswip) to the village provides a cool peer for Orked to hang out and do stuff with - cycling through the villages, climbing trees, flying kites. And as what is desired to be explored, the crossing of that line between friendship and romance, both beautiful emotions.
Mukhsin does have its cheeky moments which liven up the story, and bring about laughter, because some of the incidents, we would have experienced it ourselves, and sometimes serve as a throwback to our own recollection of childhood. In short, those scenes screamed "fun"! We observe the life in a typical kampung, where some neighbours are very nice, while others, the nosy parkers and rumour mongers, spreading ill gossip stemming from envy. There are 2 additional family dynamics seen, one from an immediate neighbour, and the other from Mukhsin's own, both of which serve as adequate subplots, and contrast to Orked's own.
As always, Yasmin's movies are filled with excellent music, and for Mukhsin, it has something special, the song "Hujan" as penned by her father, as well as "Ne Me Quitte Pas", aptly used in the movie Given that the Yasmin's movies to date have been centred around the same characters, the beauty of it is that you can watch them as stand alone, or when watched and pieced together, makes a compelling family drama dealing with separate themes and universal issues like interracial romance, love, and forgiveness. Fans will definitely see the many links in Mukhsin back to the earlier movies, while new audiences will surely be curious to find out certain whys and significance of recurring characters or events, like that pudgy boy who steals glances at Orked.
And speaking of whys, parts of Mukhsin too is curiously open, which probably is distinctive of Yasmin's style, or deliberately left as such. I thought that as a story about childhood, recollected from memory, then there are details which will be left out for sure. And subtly, I felt that Mukhsin exhibited this perfectly, with not so detailed details, and the focus on what can be remembered in significant episodes between the two.
Another highly recommended movie, and a rare one that I feel is suitable for all ages - bring along your kid brother or sister!

Ensemble Filmmaking
With an ensemble of talented actors, gifted filmmakers and brilliant cinematography, "21" is a road movie about friendship, a rollercoaster ride of five friends who have grown apart and are thrown together for one long weekend of what amounts to "Truth Or Dare." "21" is filled with moments of both comedy (a hilarious moment in a brothel with Mike Shea and Theresa Berkin that you have to see to believe) and drama. I can't wait to see what the "21" filmmakers and actors have up their sleeves next!
