Review :

An unnecessary sequel.

The follow-up of the first film, this one sets after the death of Ying. Tai, who is Ying's best friend, is an undercover cop trying to uncover the crimes of a gang.

San, a reoccurring character from the first one, survived the beat up towards the end of the film and continues to live in the sequel. We can see that San has changed from the first one as she is more afraid and passive. Tai, a new character, pretends to be tough on the outside to fit in the gang but is really actually sensitive.

I will not to compare the two films because they are separate but I will sometimes mention a few things that relate to the first film. Throughout the film, there are many flashbacks and talks about the death of Ying from the first film. The new storyline is more of a cop and mob plot. It does not really fit in with the first film because if San was not put into the story, the plot would be the same. The director's attempt to relate the stories did really poorly as San does not get any character development because she is no longer the main character. That deducts 2 points from the 10.

In the first film, there were not so many violent scenes. Since I can watch such violence, I don't think it was that gory. But what I do think of the beating scenes are extremely unnecessary. I understand that in reality gangs may have tortures even worse than shown in films, but the beatings in this are so unnecessary to the story as a whole. The unnecessary and incessant beatings deducts another 2 points.

The last 3 points I deducted was from the storyline itself. Tai's show up was really random with a whole new background. If the director wanted the audience to get the sense of Tai's actions and motives, she should at least give more background of Tai instead of reminiscing about Ying for half of the film. The last two scenes I almost couldn't bear, not because of the violence but because I kept on repeating to myself "WHAT THE F**K IS HAPPENING?!?!" People come out of everywhere and somehow connect to the whole gang and the beating starts. ALL the character's motives are SO unclear and unknown.

I give the 3 points because there are a FEW touchy scenes. The acting was great and I appreciate the effort.

To round up the whole film, and dare I say the first film as well, in a sentence is 'a story with innocent people getting beat up by random gangs.' In the end, every protagonist dies, no explanations are given, and no one needs to see the sequel to learn what happens after Ying's death. Why? Because everyone else follows her path. It goes downhill from there.

The first film is worth your time. This film makes you wish you just stayed with the first film.

"Fairfield, Idaho" is sophisticated entertainment

I saw FAIRFIELD, IDAHO at the Idaho International Film Festival and was stunned. In this cinematically impoverished age of Dogma 95, 'mumblecore' and dim-witted Tarantino imitations, this little indie movie was truly a breath of fresh air.

To describe FAIRFIELD, IDAHO as intelligent and thoughtful doesn't do it justice. To say that the low-key acting is superb and the characters are extraordinarily well delineated doesn't praise it enough.

This movie has a rare cinematic integrity in that the narrative is advanced through the images and not solely through its dialogue. This feat is nearly unheard of in the world of micro-budget, DIY film-making

• and makes director Darwin Meiners a member of a virtually extinct

species of filmmaker.

This is the kind of sophisticated entertainment I seek out at festivals.

Almost a feminist film

There was so much promise in the first part of the film. That is, it seemed that in presenting the typically harried life of a working mother that we were going to get a big feminist statement, or better yet, a solution for this very widespread problem. But no, it turns out that the plight of illegal foreign workers is actually the main subject here and that part, the second half, is nicely done.

And it's really a shame that this opportunity to make a point for feminism was missed. I found it shocking that this mother, who is both loved and abused by her family, actually has a very high-ranking job in a bank. She is abused by her loving family in that she must wake up at 5:00 am, start the laundry, clean up the kitchen, run to the grocery store for breakfast food, and all while the husband and children are still sleeping. Then of course it's her job to see that they all wake up and get to where they need to go to on time. I won't go into all the details, but this goes on and gets worse as problems develop with her mother-in-law, and she is forced to hire an illegal foreign worker to help clean. I suppose using the word "abuse" here may seem harsh, but this "loving" family was unrelenting and selfish in their demands on this woman. I found their decision to send her on a weekend holiday in a hotel just as uncaring, and more to assuage their guilt than to address the real problem.

I was hoping that there would be a new way presented for women to break out of these roles of caretaker and cleaning woman and "good little wife", but nothing was ever done with this. The whole rest of the film revolves around the mother's new relationship with this foreign worker. It would have been better to make a documentary film about that very difficult human situation, and this film could have been a brilliant statement on the universal plight of women, if only we could have been offered a vision, a new way.

The directing was wonderful, sensitive, and unblinking when presenting poverty and injustice in the lives of these illegal workers. But I can't help but wonder why the larger, feminist issue wasn't fully addressed. Probably because the director is a man....

Unappetizing wallow...a sexed-up cell-phone thriller about as familiar as its title

Ewan McGregor never convinces as a meek accountant (who actually admits to sleeping with only four women in his entire life!) whose cell-phone is switched with that of a swinging New York City lawyer (Hugh Jackman, also none-too-convincing with a hack American accent). The accountant allows himself to be submerged in the high toned-yet-seamy lifestyle of the lawyer until he's set up to be the fall-guy in a crime. Continually disappointing, derivative, unimaginative thriller filmed in washed-out winter-blues and grays, crippled by an endlessly-protracted finale. With a seemingly large budget and talented actors in the cast (including Charlotte Rampling--still beautiful in her later years), blame for the picture's failure must fall on Mark Bomback's ridiculous screenplay, which could have been penned by any student just graduating film school. *1/2 from ****

Clumsy attempt at bleak realism, never goes beyond cheap thrills.

There's a reasonable argument to say that this film exploits, or profits from merely the dramatisation of quite a serious social problem. And for the director to say he isn't in it for the entertainment made me angry. The film presents no commentary, or shows no examples of either the source of these problems, or their solution. But merely parades the junky sickness in a drug-fuelled circus of robbery and sex.

I thought the art of film was more than a fly on the wall approach, but was supposed to go further - reveal hidden meaning, or make connections between things, or at the very least be grounded in a unique style? I didn't see any of this in Em 4 Jay.

Fair enough not to be interested in middle class stories, and to explore instead a bleak world where everything is a lost cause... But does bleakness rule without question because that's just the way the director wants it? Or is he neglecting an important aspect of all these tragic contemporary tales.. that of positive energy meeting negative. Of the sister being given more than FIVE minutes over a coffee. Sorry, not going to happen in real life. An older sister would not give up that easy.

And it was unrealistic that this girl, who cried so much and felt so nervous around her sister, could dismiss her boyfriend's murder spree with little more than annoyance, but get so worked up when he sold the pills. It took it too far into clumsy fiction - she wasn't that far gone.

A Stylish and Slick Murder Mystery

"What Your Eyes Don't See" is a stylish and slick murder mystery set in the magazine publishing world of Buenos Aires, Argentina's capital city. It does a first-rate job of showing many of the local sights – Teatro Colon, Puerto Madero, Recoleta Cemetery, and the Tigre Delta, among others – and the actors are handsome and competent as they go through their paces showing us who killed the story's victims and why.

The movie's central character is a world-weary detective with the local homicide squad who is full of colorful quirks. Like Telly Savalas's Kojack, for example, this fellow sports a lollipop. It leaves you wondering if "What Your Eyes Don't See" is one entry in a recurring series on Argentine television.

One of the best black comedy's ever made.

Just walking out of this movie it made me think about how love is important in life. You can have a love life and still have time for your boys. "The Brothers" is a movie that combines elements of The Wood and Waiting To Exhale. The Brothers paled by Morris Chestnut(Jackson), D.L.Hughley(Derrick), Bill Belamy(Brian) and Shemar Moore(Terry) each have a quality that makes them special to the movie. Jackson is the commitment phobic brother who's scared to get involved with a women because of his parent failed marriage that is until he meets Denise played by the sexy Gabierlla Union. Derrick is the married one whose wife won't perform oral sex on him. Brian is the ulimate player whose can't find joy in black women so he turns to white women and Terry is a playboy who decides to go staright and marry his girlfriend. The movie is very real in it's portrayal of what black men go through when it comes to women. I related the most to Jackson though. I highly recomend this movie. See it with your girl , your boys or whoever. D.L and Bill steal every scene there in. Cliffton Powell and Jennifer Lewis are great in supporting roles.

As an American who has spent several years visiting back and forth Ecuador I thought it was a wonderful movie. The dialog between Esperanza and Tristeza keep the viewer interested and Jesús and later Andrés add much to the film. The vistas of Ecuador are beautiful and a picture says a million words. As a high school Spanish teacher I found it an excellent source when we talk about dialects of Spanish. As a teacher of high school I am very picky about what I show to the students as I don't want to show inappropriate films to them. This picture was pretty much a PG-13 film based on using the f word once and there are introductions to the person that a narrator makes that use inappropriate information such as her first period or his first orgasm....Nevertheless, overlooking those few seconds of inappropriate for high school material showing this film is an excellent idea, I just fast-forwarded that stuff which again takes up very little less than 1 minute. I highly recommend it to teachers or anyone who would like to see what Ecuador looks like in the countryside and have a very good plot. My AP Spanish students loved it and my wife from Ecuador was cracking up when she saw it. Super pleno.

It was a mistake to think you're the only one who could turn into a car--now I'm a car too!

Consider yourself warned that this movie operates on the assumption that viewers are familiar with the TV series. If you aren't already aware of the relationships between the characters (as I'm not) you're outta luck, because very little of it is explained here. And from what I've heard, things are a bit murky even then.

What makes this movie great is that it really doesn't matter. Utena is a visual smorgasborg--the backgrounds alone warrant it a high rating, impossibly lush and frequently reminiscent of art nouveau. The characters are equally wonderfully drawn. Visually, it's brilliant; the floating castle that seems to constantly rearrange itself is an astonishing feat of fantastical architecture. All in all I'd have to say this is the most gorgeous animation I've ever seen.

As for the plot...I've seen this three times now and still don't entirely get it. I have some vague theories about what's going on and why, but without the series' background I can't verify anything. The movie operates on a very surreal, symbolic level--and it's full of the eccentricities of anime, as well (not that that's a bad thing, just different--a giant car wash machine that rises out of a field of roses figures prominently in a later scene). If you go into this expecting cut-and-dry western cinema (doubtful, as by and large I expect only anime junkies would even hear of it), you're up the creek without a paddle. Even granted the contextual uncertainty, though, there is clearly a resolution. What it means is certainly debatable, but the point is that there IS a narrative here discernible in the end, if that actually matters. In this case, I don't think it does. The movie exists in its own world and can't be expected to always adhere to our rules.

Utena is awe-inspiring in its visual beauty and imagination. As a would-be fantasy writer myself I found my mind spinning off on dozens of tangents after watching it. And for one work of art to inspire another to create is perhaps the highest recommendation there is.

Being Retrenched Stinks !

It's a vicious cycle, that God has set that every once in ten years the economy will simply collapsed; companies fold, people released from their duties aka fired, unemployment rises. Vicious, really vicious.

So imagine yourself, all the while having a job, and not minding that maybe one day the job you're having will ceased. Then, out of the blue, you were kicked out the front door and being told not to bother to come back tomorrow.

And imagine that you do not have any 'other skills' to fall back upon. You do not possess a certificate, you do not that Excel is actually a proprietary software made by Microsoft and not a soft drink, and that all the work experience you have do not mean a thing to the job you are applying for.

Enter the people who have been working for their whole lives only to learn that they no longer have the job. So they went to job interviews only to be told that they do not have what it takes to be chosen as employees.

This is what the whole film is about. About a chef who loses his café. About a girl who found out that her times spent in Bangladesh worth nothing in the eyes of the interviewees, as of an engineer who found out that he is either too old or too young to fit into any jobs.

Overall, this film is okay, not in a laugh-out-loud way, but rather it takes a jab at the current economic situations happening throughout the world. People losing jobs and seeking desperately new jobs to have enough to pay for the bills and food to fill their stomachs.

I didn't rate this because I do not think any rating is justifiable as I do not want to be seen as recommending this film if I rate it a ten, and to rate it a one do not mean that thing film is not worth a watch.

Loved it

I love how the movie treats the themes with delicacy. At some parts of the movie, you just think the characters are probably insane, but they are really captivating, well developed. The best parts about it are: the music, the characters, the silences, and the themes.

It is a surprising movie. You start watching it thinking it will be some sort of creepy romance with, hopefully, a romantic ending, but it turns out to be so much more than that. It is funny because it shows an entirely different view of people, what we can expect from them, how we love and even the horrible situations we endure for loved ones.

I highly recommend it.
