Pointless and Shallow Melodrama

The pretentious "O Magnata" is a typical movie where lower classes youths are the target. Exploring the life in the periphery of São Paulo, with many scenes with skateboarders, surfers and parties, it discloses a pointless and shallow melodrama following the "rebel without cause" character Magnata. In the beginning, there is no development of this lead character and the viewer has no idea of his social condition. The motives for his way of life and friendship with low-life teenagers from the lower classes are also not explained along the story. Another problem is that it is impossible to feel empathy for any character, and it is also impressive that none of them uses drugs. Last but not the least, for people from Rio de Janeiro, the accent of the characters is annoying. My vote is four.
One stormy Glasgow night Dorothy and Petula's lives are inextricably thrown together, bonded by a common flaw. Dorothy's on the run from her boyfriend and Petula should be doing the same. Evasion, blackmail, murder, betrayal, revenge and a suitcase loaded with a million quid... it's all there... and then some.

A defence of 'Beautiful Creatures'!
I felt like I had to leap to the defence of ‘Beautiful Creatures' after what everyone had been saying about it. I made it my film of the month in my college magazine film pages. I loved it! I think that not only is it a great British film but a great film full stop. I know it only survived two weeks and was slated by the critics. I think perhaps lots of people were put off by the director's claims of it's dark humour and general shockingness whereas in reality (or unless I am unknowingly deeply psychologically disturbed) it wasn't all that bad. It does deserve it's certificate rating though, I wouldn't go that far.
I found it a welcome antidote to the recent deluge of lad's gangster/thriller flicks. It was fresh and much freer than any of those films. With good reason it has been compared to ‘Thelma and Louise' but as far as I can see it has more in common with the Wachowski brothers' ‘Bound'. Susan Lynch and Rachel Weisz were excellent. Their characters of Dorothy and Petula never came close to being your stereotypical man's-eye women. This reversal on the general way of gangster/thriller films was great stuff. The film was unapologetically British, the very British sense of humour was one of it's best points. Americans do not spare our feelings with their cruel characterisations of British people - why do our films have to America-friendly?
I think it's a shame no-one really gave a chance cos far as I'm concerned you've missed out on one of the warmest, funniest and most realistic films.

Rakesh Roshan got more success as a director then actor The film tells the story of how good friends become eniemies
The story spans 2 generations
It starts with late 40 actors(of 80's) Jeetendra and Shatrughan Sinha playing friends and some portions depicting their friendship is crude
The story is predictable though but well handled Their break up in their friendship is well handled while the second half shows how their respective children fall in love with each other The film does have some unwanted comedy scenes and some overdone drama
The film is well directed by Rakesh Roshan
Music is good too
Amongst actors Jeetendra does his part well and is subtle here though he and Shatru look too old in initial portions Shatrughan Sinha does his Bihari act well though he overdoes at times Kader Khan does his usual comedy Amongst heroines Bhanupriya is okay, Amrita Singh is alright too Sushma Seth looks too young to play Shatru's mother Kiran Kumar gives a subtle performance Saeed Jaffrey is okay Govinda does a good job though he has come a long way Neelam is adequate

Great movie
A fall release would be good for commercial distribution. The target audience will identify with the story line more then.
I liked this movie. There was a literary quality to the story line which had genuine complexity and depth. The characters were engaging, the photography was well done, even lovely at times, there was some suspense that held the different threads of the story together...incredible that such a young group produced this film.
I hope this gets wide release.
I expect we will be seeing a lot more of Leong in the future. With a bigger budget these kids could produce blockbusters in a few more years.

Worth it for the acting alone
I discovered this movie 3 years after it's release on a local college station at 1 in the morning. Actually, it was the same night I write this as I was that impressed. At first, I really wasn't sure if I was watching a documentary or a scripted film, and I've seen enough movies and enough "mockumentaries" to tell the difference, but this movie was so realistic and so incredibly well-acted, it was hard to tell. 99% of the cast is excellent, and that includes many young actors who were so far advanced in their talents and so natural, I felt like a fly on the wall as a viewer.
A movie like this certainly has it's flaws, but with it's shoe-string budget, absence of a crew, and non-professional actors, it can be easily forgiven.
The film also introduces Jessica White, who gives possibly the best performance by a child actor I've ever seen. Even in awkward moments in the movie where the dialogue isn't so sharp or the scene not so smooth, she makes it work. It would be a travesty and injustice if she doesn't get work from this movie. This is an actor who needs to be discovered because she could be great.
I look forward to seeing more by the promising director Peter Hyoguchi. He has the potential to become one of the next good young directors. And if there's any justice in the world, Jessica White will be a star.

Another Certified Winner From Claude Lelouch
Love mysteries with loads of plot twists? Here is the film for you. Claude Lelouch (A Man & A Woman)has crafted a finely honed thriller, with a top notch cast that takes us in the mind of a writer,who may or may not have some dubious means of collecting ideas for her novels. There are loads of other characters tossed in to make this a film to keep you both thinking,as well as on the edge of your seat. Fanny Ardant (always welcome in any French film) plays the writer to perfection. Dominique Pinot plays a pivotal figure who may (or may not) be a serial rapist. The rest of the cast also turns in some finer than fine performances. Dammit, let's face it...there is a pathetic lack of films like this produced in Hollywood (or as I sometimes prefer to refer it to Hollywierd). I guess as long as there is quality films being produced in Europe (or Asia,Africa,or where ever),there is no lack of films to be enjoyed,out there.

Didier Goldschmidt's portrayal of Handke's book didn't disappoint me at all.
Niels Arestrup, on top form as usual, plays Gregor, a man suffering from impatence. His previous films, such as the genius that is, Bluebeard, Bluebeard (1987), have always exited me. Anne Wiazemsky provides great support in this underrated gem.

Tajik screenwriter, producer and director Djamshed Usmonov's third feature film which he wrote, premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 59th Cannes International Film Festival in 2006, was screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section at the 31st Toronto International Film Festival in 2006, at the 30th Gothenburg International Film Festival in 2007 and is a France-Germany-Switzerland-Russia-Tajikistan co-production which was produced by French producer Marie Masmonteil, French producer Denis Carot and screenwriter and producer Robert Boner. It tells the story about Kamal, a 20-year-old man who is living in an unconsummated marriage that has made him question his manhood. After seeing a doctor who assures him that nothing is wrong with him, Kamal travels from the country to the city to find himself a woman and on a bus he meets Vera whom he takes a liking to, but who turns out to be a married factory worker.
Finely and engagingly directed by Tajik filmmaker Djamshed Usmonov, this quietly paced fictional tale which is narrated from the protagonist's point of view, draws a rare portrayal of a young man who when setting out to find a woman who can take his virginity ends up in a far more troubling situation than he initially expected. Guttersnipe sexploitation/romance picture with disco snake-dancing chick!
Glenda Kemp, a real-life snake dancer, delivers a C minus lead performance in this presumably semi-biographical South African sexploiter. The schmaltzy story concerns Kemp finding true love in her life, and having to choose between it and her career as a...*ahem*...exotic stage dancer...*cough*...who uses live snakes in her act.
Although a few stretches of boredom disqualify this oddity from "all-time classic sleaze" nominations, there is still enough poky appeal to curb most fans of strange, art-void cinema. The spasmodic placement of a perfervid soap-suds romance within the glamorous, sub-rosa world of reptile pole-dancer pageantry was certainly a one-time-only concept, a novelty even further itallicized by the film's literal and serious elucidation. This self-composed approach to such drooling indelicacies may put some viewers off...and leave others to sneer with delighted schadenfreude.

Doesn't anyone pay attention?
For God's sake people, let's try to get it right. The Weller character isn't carrying a virus or a pathogen or anything else biological and the Hurt character isn't a disease expert. Hurt plays a hazardous waste clean-up guy for the UN. Weller gets a dose of pesticide in the face that metabolizes into a chemical that causes instant fatal allergic reaction to anyone he touches.
This may seem like a trivial difference but at least it's a new idea, not just a recycling on any number of other movies, dating back at least to the Satan Bug in 1965 if not earlier. I'll pass up judging the rest of the film as everyone else has, but you've got to wonder about the validity of anyone's attention who apparently didn't pay any attention to the freakin' movie.

Trademark Karan Johar
I respect Karan Johar. He is an honest director. There are a lot of young directors out there today that are taking the Hollywood approach to film making and the end result is a mish mash of a desi product in a foreign packaging. Karan Johar, on the other hand, takes a desi story, puts it in a desi package but only refines it more than most others do. What you get is a very good Bollywood movie that has elements of emotion, melodrama, comedy, family values, romance and music in equal doses. Yes, I admit that the story does leave a lot of questions unanswered, but that's OK considering the desired target market is one that is alright with that and sheds expectations of credibility before walking in to the cinema.
K3G is a beautiful example of what a good director can do. Agreed, the movie may not have been as great without the power star cast, but then, let us not forget that before those people are stars, they are very good actors. Well, except maybe Kareena and Hritik.
This is where the minus points are. Hritik did nothing but weep perpetually. Kareena played an overbearing slut. And to top it off, she and her friends all spoke American slang and also had that slight twang of an American accent. (PHAT: Pretty Hot And Tempting?? That's ghetto lingo!) And I really didn't like the national anthem thing. i felt it was a little pushed. I think KJ went a little overboard there in trying to make the NRI audience cry. The only time that trick has worked effectively was years ago in "naam" when Pankaj Udhas sang the "Chitthi Aayi Hai" song.
There are certain scenes that I found really well done in the movie. The last time Rahul meets Rohan before the latter goes off to boarding school, he has a talk with him about taking care of Mum, losing weight and joining he cricket team. They are sitting on a bench, side by side having this talk. Years later, in the second half of the movie, after Rahul realizes that his brother has been living with him all this while, the scene again cuts to them sitting on a bench, this time ten years later. It could've been shot anywhere, but the fact that the setting is so similar just makes it even more memorable.
The scene where Nandini (mom) meets Rahul after years at the shopping mall, she places her hand on his shoulder and he turns around. Wow.
And the finale of course. Amitabh breaking down with SRK.
One mustn't expect great international cinema here. this is what great Bollywood is all about.
