Hallows Point

I have been a horror fan since I was a teen. I remember when the exorcist came out and it was impossible to see it because of my age. I finally got to see it later on video and then finally in the theater.

I have heard so much about this movie but never had a chance to see it all because of it's limited release in theaters. Too bad the good old days of independent horror drive-ins and big old theaters before they were chopped into Cineplexes are gone.

I finally did get to see a bootleg video copy (when you get a bootleg the picture quality is always going to be bad) but I was amazed at the production quality of this film - believe me I have seen them all and was absolutely floored when I heard the entire film was independently produced, filmed, edited, etc all in Tampa, Florida! That alone is commendable. Everything from the makeup to the cinematography to directing, music, etc was that of a Hollywood produced film.

I thought the movie itself was entertaining. It had a good mix of good old horror along with mini subplots comedy and some other surprises you do not see in many horror movies. I am so sick of all the remakes of all the classics like Texas chainsaw, Friday the 13th, Bloody Valentine, Hills have eyes - come on we need more original writers and directors more movies like Hallows Point, Wrong Turn, Hostel.

When this movie is released on DVD check it out turn the lights out, hopefully it will be a stormy night and turn up the surround sound (that was another very good aspect of the film). The sound / music are excellent.

"Tearjerker"-type of Movie

On Monday, December 11th, here in Philippines, I decided to watch this movie, alone, at SM Megamall, as my wife had to work at her office. Since my Tagalog comprehension is limited, I wanted to watch a movie that has a GP rating and with young children, so I can understand the Tagalog language easier. So, I watched it, not knowing that this movie is a Tearjerker.

While watching it on Monday, I sent my wife an SMS that I am watching this movie and she told me she wanted to watch this movie, too. At this moment, I did not know this movie is a Tearjerker. (Most often, I avoid tearjerkers because I grew up under the condition that men are not supposed to cry.) Throughout the movie, many people were crying, then there were scenes that made people laugh, especially how Maricel Soriano acted when chasing for the taxi.

The scene that affected me, most, was when Ruby entered the Louise' home and she seeks the attention of Louise, but was constantly ignored as her mom continued to iron the clothes. -- For me, growing up in the USA, I am able to recognize & reflect at that emotional scene.

Ruby was restricted from doing and saying everything, as identified on the bus ride. -- When I was growing up in the USA, I recognized "restrictions" being raised by a Filipino father in the US Navy and American mother from New England part of the United States.

On Thursday, I watched the movie, again, but this time, with my wife, and she also enjoyed the movie. During this time, she saw me cry, however, she cried more and the group of people behind us and around the cinema, also cried. My wife enjoyed the entire movie. She said that the movie portrays the True Lives of People, worldwide. I would agree because I see the Nanny-scenes, almost daily, when living in the USA.

My mother in-law (mother of my wife) is very interested in watching this movie, as I type this comment for IMDb.

As I have seen many Filipino movies, from 1992 to present time, I strongly recommend this movie as a MUST WATCH. (The last movie I enjoyed as much, as "All About Love.") I plan to buy the DVD of Inang Yaya as soon as it is released.

bad direction!!!

aaya saawan jhoom ke starts in a very filmy style.this makes us believe that it is yet another boring movie about bichde hue maa-beta.but the story is quite different.

Yashodha(Nirupa Roy) kills a man for trying to rape her, fearing that she might get caught by the police she leaves her baby at a temple which is later adopted by a childless couple (Nasir Hussain and Dulari).They later have a daughter (Bindu).They name their son as Jaishankar(Dharmendra). He grows up and there is happiness in the family.But his mother is dead. Once when he visits a music concert he gets mistaken to be the singer Jaidev Kanpuri by the organizer(Rajendranath).He later introduces him to Aarti(Asha Parekh). Jaishankar and Aarti keep meeting each other and fall in love.She then asks him to meet her father.But the unexpected happens.Aarti's father gets killed in an accident by Jaishankar.

What happens later forms the crux of the story.Another plot unfolds during the latter part of the film.Though the story is different and new,the treatment of the film is not good.The direction by Raghunath Jalani is very filmy and below average.The entire Nirupa Roy angle could have been done away with.The murder plot in the latter half of the film could have been given more importance.The director has tried to turn the movie into a sentimental family drama which does not work.The direction could have been better and mature.The music direction by Laxmikant- Pyarelal is good.The song 'O manjhi chal' is the best song of the film.It is also very well picturised. The lyrics by Anand Bakshi are also good.Coming to the acting department Dharmendra,Rajendranath,Bindu and Aruna Irani stand out.Asha Parekh could have been better.Laxmi Chhaya dances well and her acting is fine,but could have been better.The rest of the cast comprising Ravindra Kapoor,Jagirdar,Nasir Hussain,Jalal Agha,Dulari,Nirupa Roy and others are good.

On the overall the movie can be watched with the family but is not up to the mark.It is a one time watch.But the song O manjhi chal can be watched again and again.It is beautifully picturised.

Chinese-Korean filmmaker Zhang Lu shares his artistic destiny with the likes of Japanese filmmakers Yoichi Sai (Blood and bones) and Lee Sang Il (Borderline) who are ethnically Korean but have been creatively active for all their lives in their country of residence Japan. As they have personally been victims of indifference, they have decided to mitigate their sufferings by showing their anger,frustration,hurt, disappointment and misery in their films. Their films are about the problems faced by those people who form part of two cultures. The inherent message of these films is how difficult it is to live like a second class citizen in a land whose customs, traditions and are not at all different from one's homeland. On the contrary, "Grain in ear" directed by Zhang Lu tackles the essential question of cultural identity. The film speaks of the cultural clash faced by Cui Shunji, an unmarried woman of Korean origin. She does everything in order to keep her young boy happy. "Grain in ear" portrays how ordinary people are driven to madness when they are provoked beyond the normal limit of endurance. For this film, Zhang Lu received full support as well as cooperation from an equally great writer turned filmmaker, the acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang Dong (Oasis) who also worked for a brief while as South Korean minister of culture.

Review :

Fantastic movie.

This movie just screened at the Florida Film Festival in Orlando, Fl. The crowd applauded, laughed and cheered throughout. This should be a big hit if it has a wide release in May. I loved the fact the film was set in the mid-80's, when I was also a student in junior high school. The soundtrack to the film was a lot of fun with hits by Depeche Mode and Cars by Gary Neuman. Also, I swear that I saw the band members of Travis in a scene shot in the faculty lounge of the school. I think the film is equally rewarding for both children and adults and will also be appreciated by anyone who love the art of cinema. I honestly can't imagine anyone not being moved and amused by this little film.

Very funny

The plot of this one _is_ a little bit thin...but who cares?! It has some very funny scenes (playing spoons) and some great shots of extreme sports. The plot is basically just a way to get all of the sports in and the funny scenes are put in along the way. I watched this with a bunch of friends and we all laughed quite a bit. It is a good clean movie with only one slightly embarrassing scene that has a great punchline. ;)

Excellent acting, writing, directing - a touching morality tale.

I've been an extra on over a dozen movies and this is the one I'm most proud to have participated in. Although it is a bit predictable, that doesn't lessen its emotional impact and touching story.

Lisa Pepper gives a subtle and effective performance. This is the first Michael Landon, Jr. film I've seen and he's an even better director than his father.

Elliot Gould gives a fresh spin to what could have been a cliché -- the hard-bitten news editor. His gentle humor makes the role more than it would have been in lesser hands.

The kids manage to be cute, while avoiding diabetes inducing sweetness.

If you are looking for a family film with unusual depth and feeling -- this one of the best.

I also highly recommend the DVD for it's interesting and insightful features.

Entertaining, Infuriating and very, very sick

The premise is not a thousand miles away from William Wyler's "Desperate Hours" but the distances here are measured in a different way. Michael Heneke the "author" of this horror thriller of sorts is at the service of his vision of himself. He's not the first "author" to suffer from the same malady but here it's so bloody obvious that becomes kind of funny. From the opening credits you know that "pretension" will permeate the whole movie and it does but, the funny thing is that it's riveting. I watched the whole nonsense with my mouth open. That's an achievement, isn't it? I haven't seen the original German version (a blow by blow account directed by Heneke himself)but, I must confess, I think I will, I think I want to. Don't ask me why. This is as empty as anything I've ever seen. A public act of obscenity and yet you can't, you just can't look away. Naomi Watts is terrific as the smart middle class wife and mother that will notice for first that Michael Pitt is not that good an actor. She sees through him - who wouldn't? - pretty much from the start. Michael Pitt plays the creep as a creep with good manners. So on the nose that doesn't manage to be frightening. He is shocking because of what he does but not for what he appears to be. He has no sexual presence. Tim Roth, as the weakling husband is disturbingly convincing and the young actor playing their son is truly wonderful. So here I am, talking about a film I kind of detested with unexpected respect. Michael Heneke may be one of those artists who are extraordinary self promoters, but he's an artist none the less and like real artist often do, divide, confront and provoke. So, did I like "Funny Games"? No. Will I see it again? Absolutely.

Love Torn in Dream: Combinatorics in Storytelling

This superb exercise in combinatorics demonstrates the cinematographic power of Raoul Ruiz. A black and white prelude to the movie sets up the tone and announces the intent to tell nine stories, all marked with letters of alphabet, with the subsequent permutations of these stories. Not only the plotlines get mutated and re-ordered, so do the actors, hats, beards, accents, manners - in short, whatever MAY identify an actor in a role ceases to be such an identifier. The plot itself becomes a mystery, since there are parallel searches for the treasure, the map of treasure, which as we learn is a treasure in itself, a coin, a kidnapped father etc. etc. etc. The camera work is breathtaking. From the very first tale, where camera makes a full circle around a reading monk while the surroundings change from daytime to nighttime (all in one take), to the very end where the same woman appears both in a coffin and on a tree, as well as a free spirit. One can only feel happy to hang on to one's good senses immediately after the dazzling story twists and visual bravura. It would be foolish even to dare think of "getting it" in one screening. This movie, filled with visual, verbal and audio gags must be seen numerous times. Knowledge of French would be beneficial since the subtitles cannot convey the semantic depth of Ruiz's sharp and tornado-like dialogues (e.g. when asked about the cause of death, the character responds that the deceased just had a "crise de foi(e)", which is either "liver deficiency" or "crisis of faith" depends on what one hears :) ) If you have enjoyed the visual luxury of Le Temps retrouve, you would be dazzled by Combat d'amour. The only thing that I find missing is Catherine Deneuve or Gerard Depardieu, the only two names that can practically force distributors to buy this movie. Just like Donald Sutherland almost single-handedly brought Canadian taxbreaks to thousands of American and Canadian movies, the French government should oblige the abovementioned "godparents" to appear in almost every French movie, making them exportable and distributable :)

Pointless

Ah, that centuries-old story of two young people falling in love: if done right, the resulting film can be as poetic and beautiful as Before Sunrise; if done wrong... hell, too much crap to list. The Golden Helmet belongs to the second category.

What went awry? How could the film be so dull? It's got all the classic elements: a gang-related male protagonist, a "decent" female lead and an unlikely, inevitably tragic love affair blossoming between them. The script even provides a valid opposition to their bond: the girl's father, a high school principal whose hatred for the boy stems from the fact that it was the latter and his friends who put the man's wife in a hospital bed. How can such a tale fail to stir even the simplest of emotions?

Oh, wait, there is a good reason: the same story has been told countless times since the very birth of cinema, and eight times out of ten the outcome is a predictable, daft picture. The Golden Helmet is supposed to be different since it is, according to the director, based on real events. Oddly, that doesn't show: every scene in the movie screams "teen drama clichè" rather than "true story", especially the downright woeful first encounter, set by a river - plain stupid. It's textbook film-making, professionally executed. Too bad it's also incredibly boring.

Even worse than all that, though, is the "auteurish" open ending: what's the point of having that in a film with no plot?
