Best Sports film I have ever seen
The actors are terrific, the story is both true and inspirational. I was very moved by the movie. There is a very surprise ending after the ending that brings the whole movie together. Although at times, it seems a little sappy and predictable, sports films are always based on terrible players doing terrific things. Four Japanese girls, 3 totally inept at the sport, come together to form a curling team in Northern Japan. The town is famous for scallops and curling, and peoples' status in this little fishing village is based on their curling abilities. The girls do little, until a seemingly inept coach teaches them about the game, and about themselves. In the end, they pull it all together to become an adequate team. In the process, they discover the true meaning of friendship, effort, shame and puppy love. Definitely a movie the whole family can enjoy as well. 10 out of 10

Portrayal of a sullen teenager fails to excite
Lovely Rita is not lovely at all. She is a sulky, deceitful, calculating teenager bent on seducing the local bus driver. She is very much an outsider at school and is the source of many arguments at home.
In the title role Barbara Osika gives a good rendition of a frustrated and unbalanced youngster, despite the fact that the script is both rather dull and uninteresting.
A couple of sex scenes are suggested rather than portrayed in any detail. The faces of the participants are immobile and unseen by the camera. The back of the young girl's head is seen blocking out the face of the bus driver. With very little movement the rest is left to the imagination of the viewer. The scene is short. One wonders if the censor has been at work here.
The director seems to have an obsession with the backs of heads, but sometimes it can be quite effective. The bus driver is filmed from behind as he sits at the wheel ( just as the passengers see him) while Rita exchanges fleeting glances with him in the mirror above his head.
It's amazing how the lid of a pedestal toilet seat can start an argument which grows from day to day to an unexpectedly very tense situation.
The final climax comes quite suddenly and adds a nice bit of drama sadly lacking in the earlier part of the film.

A rubbish disappointment
This film really is appalling. I was drawn to it because it had the gorgeous Kate Ashfield (Shaun of the Dead) in it but after spending an hour and a half on watching this tedious dross I wish I hadn't bothered.
It meanders along to nowhere in particular and seems to have no discernible point to it or even a narrative. Most of the characters have nothing of interest to say and the camera-work is poor. The worst thing is that several scenes are directionless, some scenes end far to early and often characters don't say more - when they really need to.
I actually felt quite angry after I watched this film because it's annoying low-level indie rubbish like this which actually holds back the British Film Industry from succeeding internationally. Films like this have no discernible audience and so are doomed to fail even before they are made. As long as Britain keeps making rubbish small-scale, low-ambition films like this then we will never move on and have a strong industry which doesn't need American finance to survive all the time.
And just to really annoy me further the talented Kate Ashfield was completely underused and wasted and was just required to play a simpering idiot to the odious character of Aiden Gillen. He's OK in 'The Wire' and 'Game of Thrones' but terrible in this film.
This was a complete waste of time for all concerned and the only bit worth watching was the bizarre sight of comedians Adam & Joe trundling in as if they'd walked into the wrong film! Anyone thinking of watching this film - do yourself a favour and simply don't bother!

Poorly written conspiracy drama/mystery about the possibility that AIDS was introduced to the public by the government. Wlaschiha plays a gay researcher looking for answers--that within this foggy plot would be hard for anyone to find. Despite the cinematography itself being commendable, the camera hungers for characters of true depth instead of the shallow, amateur acting it unfortunately has to convey. Grade: D+

Feels 20 years long
I like post-apocalyptic fiction so I thought this movie would be at least marginally entertaining. Things start well but the arrival of the jolly jester was when the alarm bells started ringing for me. All of a sudden the whole story turns limper than a puppets handshake and the violin rises to an annoying pitch and stays there till the credits.
My main problem with this film is that while it presents you with some interesting imagery the story has all the depth and meaning of a dirty fart. I still can't get over that pathetic jester-doctor character, was that supposed to be heart warming? Were we supposed to be spellbound by his juggling, unexplained magical antics and wise words? Because I wasn't, I was just irritated to realise that the guy who designed the cover for this movie had more imagination than the people making it.
Also, and this is a cheap shot, that woman with the ginger hair (Diane Salinger) looks like The Predator with his helmet off.

A thrilling and visually beautiful rendering of a profound truth.
I went to see Hunger at a festival, and was left speechless. It took me a couple of days to fully digest the film. Hunger,both in its original manifestation as a 1890's novel by Knut Hamsun,and in this modernized version, is a parable of the human ego as itmakes the agonizing journey to confront reality, both on the grittylevel of survival and on the more esoteric level, which Andrew Harvey,Sufi scholar, describes as the place where the soul is, "burnt alive...mocked, derided, lacerated, opened up by visionary ecstasy.." And so the reason I reacted with such passion to this movie is simply that it is true; a thrilling and visually beautiful rendering of a profound truth. Maria Geise gets credit, not only for recognizing the beauty of the message in Knut Hamsun's masterpiece, but for bringing it to the screen in such an alarming, visceral, and scrappy (not in the sense of "fragmented", but in the sense of "a fighting spirit"),way.
I thought long and hard before coming up with the term to describe Joseph Culp's brilliant portrayal of the down-and-out screenwriter. It is nothing less than Chaplinesque--the character he gives us is at once endearing, annoying, pathetic,and deeply profound.
This is a movie for anyone who has dug deeply into the pockets of the soul and come up empty-handed. That would be all of us.

Pictures to die for, poets to cry for
Raoul (Andreas Sportelli) and Raphaela (Rebecca Winter) visit an exhibition of modern paintings, but he ignores the pictures and really just wants to make love with her. When the exhibition is closed, the artists and their friends attack the young couple, and in a strangely surreal atmosphere, the aggression turns from provocative and playful into bloody and murderous...
When I watched this movie for the first time, i.e. when it was released in the 1980s on video tape, it was for Karl-Heinz von Liebezeit in the first place because I liked his performance in "Nacht der Wölfe" (1981) and here he plays Furio, the wildest one of the bad guys. "It's war, a ritual", he once explains what is the reason behind all the violence: "You attended our exhibition, but not one of you paid any attention to our pictures. We are our pictures, and they strike back when they're insulted." The whole movie was shot in one location, a gallery at Munich. The soundtrack is minimalistic, distorted, monotonous, disturbing, from a noisy background to the synthetic sounds of the 1980s which seem so cheap today - but it is extremely effective insofar as the audience feels uneasy.

Can a man re-educate his old father?
Well, first of all I'm a fierce death penalty opposer... but this great debut by Alessandro Angelini hardly seems to indicate that really prison can cure your soul if you're an old criminal... neither Fabio, a professional as a prisoners assistant and teacher, for welfare services, can do really something to get his real father (which more than 20 years before left his family and little child - i.e. Fabio) at least to show some normal and human feelings...
...anyway I really loved this movie, and it's been a beautiful surprise to see lot of people watching it despite of colossal Apocalypto...
...and there's at least one great actor: it's Giorgio Colangeli as the old prisoner (Fabio's father): not just the only one good performance in this movie, but surely excellent!
Hope this to be the beginning of a great career for director Angelini!

Review :
Family drama set in working class town.
Cupola no aru Machi (A Town of Cupolas) was released a few days before I was born. It chronicles the daily hardships and adventures of folk living in Kawaguchi, a city just one stop out of Tokyo in 1962. the grinding poverty, and squalor are pervasive, as is the genuine kindness that many of the people demonstrate even in the face of adversity.
It is interesting that I first went to Kawaguchi in 1985, and some of the scenes from the film were still possible to imagine. The slums where the main characters lived were cleared away in the late 80s, to make way for development, and it was said at the time that some residents resisted moving, even though they were compensated, as they feared losing their close sense of community. Now, in 2007, Kawaguchi is a glass and concrete jungle, and the area around the station would be utterly unrecognizable to anyone returning after a 45 year absence. Although the foundry featured in the movie (and probably the one where some scenes were shot) is still intact, an ancient building surrounded by newer developments, quite a few of the smaller factories and perhaps half of the original foundries have been swallowed up by parking lots, high rise apartments, and the rest.
The main character, 15 year old Jun wants to attend high school, even though her family is poor, and her father, a drunken gambling no-hoper is almost unemployable. One scene is particularly poignant, as he collapses in an alcoholic stupor, his wife tries to find some of his wages that he seems to have blown on betting and booze, she kicks his inert form screeching her frustration and rage as the family looks on. He eventually accepts the help of the local Communist-run labour unions, and Jun becomes friends with the youthful local organiser, although their relationship is more along the lines of a watchful older brother and his little sister than a potential romantic couple.
Like many traditional Japanese stories, rather than a detailed plot and build-up, we are seeing more a snapshot of life, rather like dropping in on some acquaintances, getting to know them just a little, then bidding them farewell, forever wondering what became of them. This is the movie's strength, as the ending leaves you wondering what comes next.

Three characters face the small pains of life
The device of intersecting threads is used here en passant. Three individuals -- a man, a young woman, a mid-aged woman -- wait for an evening city bus. They are strangers and not speaking to each other. Across the street, a fancy car pulls over. A man comes out, opens the back door and walks a small dog to the curb. He ties the dog to a hydrant (or something fixed, I can't remember). He drives off leaving the puzzled dog alone. The three individuals watch this. When the car is gone, they realize the driver has abandoned the dog. They are outraged and decide to rescue the dog. That's how the film opens.
The three characters will not cross paths again except through a very unimportant indirect connection. Each person is dealt with within its own thread. We alternate between the three.
We don't get to follow what happens every day of the 53 day period. We sample. Each day is introduced on the screen: lunes, martes, viernes, lunes, martes, miercoles, jueves, viernes. We jump to febrero and resume the sampling of the days of the week: miercoles, domingo, lunes.
The man is married, has a son, and a job that does not pay particularly well. The pregnant wife if expecting twins. A family of five is going to be a financial stress. Things begin to fall apart.
The young woman is a string instrument musician. She is trying to get accepted into a quartet run by her male teacher. What price is she willing to pay to be accepted? Hope and disappointment.
The middle-aged single woman is a teacher who has been attacked by one of her student. Her confidence has been shattered. After a rest period she restarts teaching with some apprehension. She is also trying to spruce her life with a male presence despite her tendency to be a loner. Will she succeed?
On the side, there is Felix the dog. A minor role but a reminder that animals also have bad days.
At the core of these stories are the vicissitudes of life and how persons face up to them. It's the oscillation between the short moments of happiness and the lengthier moments of sadness. It's heartbreak. It's money problems. It's treachery. It's life.
There are no wasted scenes. The style is crisp. The end is hopeful but the last scene is a perfect distillation of the thematic core of the three narratives.
