Bizarre, funny, and just wrong!

How to explain "?" is almost an oxymoron in its own right, just by the name itself.

On its surface the comedy and plots are in your face, crass and direct. But, underneath its loud bark is an even more impactful bite. The humor is deep and serves to address important, yet rarely talked about issues in the world today.

"?" is a film that needs to be digested two or three times if one is to capture all its neunces, subplots and overt comical jabs at society.

If you have a strong stomach, and a love for twisted humor, you should own this film, otherwise, go buy another copy of Harry Potter or the Toy Story.

Finally, a real man

Way more than just a football thuggery story, as our protagonist has to weave his way from being an orphaned Black kid (Nonso Anozie) raised by White foster parents in a predominantly White London east end neighborhood to being a self-respected man with a job, family and peace of mind. Along this most circuitous route, he encounters racism by both Whites and Blacks: by Whites because of his color and by Blacks because of his cockneyed "White" sounding speech patterns and by his reluctance to "go Black" to his so-called African/Jamaican roots. He is quite content to merely be himself and is fully comfortable with his Caucasian foster parents who brought him up with love and attention. He cares far more about his family and his mates than for some artificial and ephemeral political/racial cause. The jail cell scene with the back and forth dialogue between Cass and his "Rasta-ish" cell-mate bears this point out.

But his issues with the aforementioned football thuggery with its concomitant need for constant revenge through violence is keeping him from the realization of his true inner self, the real man he wants to be. The thrust of this film deals with how, over long periods of time, he must manage to extricate those inner demons in order to achieve any sort of lasting peace. And a superlative job indeed is done to portray this metamorphosis by Jon Baird & co., especially the lead role by Nonso. No fancy existential/psychological drama in this hard-hitting, straight-forward piece: just a man in search of himself with the hopes of finding some semblance of a peaceful, fulfilling existence.

Could this be the best film of 2001?

Amazing film. The reviews posted - at the time of this writing - on the IMDb page are sad, because I don't think the writers were ready for what kind of movie it is. (Stephen Holden's pan in the New York Times is especially foolhardy and thoughtless.) It helped to have a little advanced word, in order to brace myself. As it stands, it should have defeated "Dancer in the Dark" at Cannes last year, handily. And if I see a better movie this year, it'll be something for the history books.

It's not for the faint of heart. It's three hours and thirty-seven minutes long, in black and white, and in Japanese. And it's very slow-moving. The cinematography is beautiful, but that may not be enough for folks to hack through nearly four hours.

But the extreme length and slowness is not unjustified. It opens with a horrifying, traumatic event that provides an emotional undercurrent that informs the remainder of the story, in much the same way as "Saving Private Ryan" did (let that not discourage the anti-Spielbergers), and as the film progresses, the event becomes a memory, part of the characters' and ours, too. And the slowness isn't really slowness - it's the playing out of events and interactions as they would happen in real time (the story spans a few months, I believe, perhaps even a year, and maybe more).

"What's the freaking story?" I hear you ask...well, here goes. The opening sequence, which will undoubtedly inspire comparisons and contrasts to "The Sweet Hereafter" (as will the entire film), shows the hijacking of a commuter bus by a businessman pushed over the edge. As the scene unfolds, he has already killed a few passengers, the police are surrounding the bus, and he has used newspapers to block all the windows.

Without revealing too much, the bus driver and two teens - a brother and a sister - survive the incident. The driver (Koji Yakusho, star of "Shall We Dance?" and "The Eel") is shaken deeply, and leaves his brother and parents to wander. The youths' mother runs off with another man, and their father dies soon after in an auto accident - with insurance payments, they can live, but there is no one to watch over them.

I could go into more of the plot - and most critics will, I'm sure - but that isn't really necessary. The key to the movie is that the events seem to be played out as they would in real life, and that the movie camera just "happens to be there" to catch them and tell the story. Sure, this is the goal of all narrative films, but with "Eureka," the process seems to have been reinvented and renewed. The film is longer than most, but not a moment is wasted; it's one of the most efficiently edited movies I've ever seen. Every shot, nuance, glance, spoken word, everything has a reason for being.

There are some who say the movie is too somber, too gloomy. It isn't really. It's somber, sure, but it doesn't strain for it. There is humor - deadpan, mostly - and great joy, too. And if you love great cinema, there is even greater joy!

More of an extended TV episode than a movie...

As one can guess from the title, "Tokyo Friends: The Movie" is the theatrically released film followup to the popular 2005 Fuji TV "J-Dorama" (Japanese TV Drama) "Tokyo Friends". The original five-episode drama series was your standard melodrama/romance comedy which focused on the bohemian lifestyles of four young girls who come to Tokyo seeking out their artistic and creative dreams, ambitions and passions. The drama starred petite J-pop idol Otsuka Ai who portrayed lead character Iwatsuki Rei, who rather conveniently, was an aspiring rock musician and singer.

The movie picks up right after the point of where the TV series left off, with all the girls at various stages of their professional/personal lives: Rei is still struggling to find fame along with her rock band "Survival Company"; Working girl, Fujiki Ryoko (Maki Yoko) has finally found her "Mr. Right" and is busily preparing for her impending wedding; Aspiring actress Hayama Hirono (Matsumoto Rio) has written a comical adaptation of Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet" and is frantically trying to prepare for its theater debut; Art Major Abiko Mari (Kobayashi Mao) has since moved to America and is assisting a gallery owner in New York. Rei's mentor and lover Shintani Ryuuji has also moved on as well, following his dream of becoming a rock musician by going to New York and leaving things unsettled with Rei.

The bulk of the movie follows Rei as she heads to New York to find Ryuuji and hopefully reconcile with him.

Kozo Nagayama, whose movie "The Backdancers!" also delved with similar female bonding friendships and chasing fame, here seems to offer more of the same melodramatic storytelling that made his TV dramas ("Tokyo Love Story", "Itotsu Yane No Shita", "Long Vacation", "Lipstick") such popular hits.

"Tokyo Friends: The Movie" feels very much like an extended TV episode both in structure and pacing and is tailor made specifically for fans of the TV drama. While this may pacify the target fan base, it really doesn't help the casual viewer who may not share the same emotional connections to these characters.

While Otsuka Ai is fetchingly cute in a Avril Lavigne/pop punk sort of way, but she doesn't really have the same screen persona of someone like Nakashima Mika who portrayed a very similar rock girl character in fan favorite "Nana".

While "Tokyo Friends: The Movie" does make me want to go back and see the TV series that it stems from, its not because of like for the characters. It's mainly to understand more of the story, something that the movie presumes you already know.

Grim Sweeper is a cinematic work of art

"Grim Sweeper" is a wonderfully entertaining movie. The acting is good, the filming is good. The editing is great and the score has some wonderful selections from local artists. "Grim Sweeper" is not the first in its genre to focus on death but it does so in a way that is much more slap-stick comedy and less Buffy obsessed campy ghouls and goblins. The filmmakers should be rewarded for a first attempt that resulted in a movie that entertains and proves itself among any of the higher costing productions. While it may not be a classic that will get on the AFI's top 100 movies, it's certainly one you would want to watch again and again.

Honest about the truth

First of all, this movie is really good. The acting is good, not great, but good. The plot is like the other Swedish teenage movies, BUT, this one is really well done, and it's honest in every way. There is a rape scene in the movie, it's really hard to watch. What i mean, don't compare this movie with the other. Think of this as it is just ONE movie. The music in the movie is good and one thing that is really sad is that the young guy in the movie, who plays "Ville" is dead. He died in a car accident some days after they made the movie, and he was dead when it came to the cinemas.

But afterall, a really good movie that is honest about the truth.

Gritty tale loosely based on actual events...

Don't let the film format (16mm) fool you. This is a gritty and somewhat graphic story based on actual events which took place in Canada some 30 years ago. John Robinson is a nice 14 year old kid. He's good looking, a natural athlete and the prime suspect in a rape and murder case. The shoddy police and forensic investigation seals the boy's fate. Child witnesses also sabotage John's hope of being found innocent. The movie follows John's harrowing experience in court but also explores the complexities of teen sexuality. The star is Andrew Skidd whose stand out performance is quite moving. The editing and sound is not up to par but watching it for Skidd alone is worth it. This is a rare film to find but one you won't want to overlook.

Three Very Erotic Episodes in São Paulo

(1) "A Carta de Érico" ("The Letter from Érico") The first sailor (Arlindo Barreto) brings a letter from a man named Érico that he had stumbled on an alley in Porto Alegre. He arrives at the address in São Paulo and knocks on the door but nobody answers. He recalls that Érico had told him to insist since it would be very important to see the person. Meanwhile in the apartment, the depressed Ms. Cibele Marcondes (Patrícia Scalvi) is ready to commit suicide. The sailor opens the door, has sex with the disconsolate woman and saves her. When she opens the envelope, there is only a blank piece of paper. What they do not know is the Érico is probably a guard angel that has protected Cibele.

Directed by John Doo, this stylish episode shows a great dramatic performance of Patrícia Scalvi and a classy location. Arlindo Barreto is weaker but does not compromise the episode. My vote is seven.

(2) "Peixe Fora d'Água" ("Fish out of Water") The second sailor (Pericles Campos) cruises in a gay bar and two men beat up on him. He meets the sexy Susana (Matilde Mastrangi) that invites him to go to her place to have sex. When he is waiting for Susana in her room, the criminal Cesar (Marthus Mathias) arrives with a revolver but leaves him with Susana. They have sex and Susana proposes a deal to the sailor: Susana and her three partners would go to the house of her ex-husband to steal her jewelry and they need a new face to help them. The naive sailor accepts to team up with the gang with tragic consequences.

Directed by David Cardoso, this predictable episode has very hot and almost explicit sex scenes, exposing the naked body of Matilde Mastrangi in every possible angle. My vote is six.

(3) "Júlio e o Paraíso" ("Júlio and the Paradise") The third and older sailor, Júlio, meets five starving hippie young women completely broken on the street and he invites them to have lunch with him. Then they go to their house, and they find that Júlio has a large amount with him. They decide to kill him by having excessive sex with them.

Directed by Ody Fraga, the funny story is a sort of "La Grande Bouffe" of 1973 but with the man killed by too much sex. My vote is six.

An awful movie in every sense

Even amateurs produce better movies these days. The dubbing of the characters is so awful it reminds you of the sleazy Italian movies of the 70s and 80s where content had no place in the movie, and sex scenes were everything. This is repeated in this movie, and makes it devoid of any artistic merit. The characters' motives are masked at best, and there are too many uncomfortable 'coincidences'.

The acting is bad beyond belief. And the subject is not researched at all. A 13 year old history student can teach a lot more than our 'professor' in the movie. There is no knowledge of the way Islam spread. The professor equates Ottoman Empire with the Moors and the previous Caliphates, where in many cases these were antagonistic entities. And the professor forgets to mention that the wars between Muslims and Christians started with the crusades where the Vatican tried to 'repossess' the 'Holy land'; an extension of the wars fought by the Roman Empire. The movie also fails to state that the Inquisition and the church terrorized people for centuries, and it was only by repeated defeats of the Crusaders at the hands of Muslim army that the break in Vatican rule materialized, and the flow of scientific, philosophical and artistic material from Muslim countries into the Church dominated lands began leading to 'Renaissance' and the Age of Enlightenment.

F. Murray Abraham is over the top as usual anyway, but the only regret is having Harvey Keitel staining his image in this manner. My take on this movie: pure garbage.
